How the webconference will work

General info

First things first: If you are registered, you will get your dedicated invitation link on friday, 2020.12.04, evening (UTC+1).

This year’s Summit will be hosted by the Thünen-Institute as web conference. We will use Cisco Events as our conference software which will enable us to split the participants into two groups:

Attendees
Panelists (Moderator, Presenter, Host)

To get an overview of Cisco Events you can take a look at the (commercial) video done by Cisco themselves. Of course the summit is free of charge and there is no monetization.

As attendee

The attendees can follow the presentations and ask questions as part of a dedicated Q&A chat window. They will not be able to share their own screen. If needed they can be given permission to talk - e.g. for discussions with the panelists.

You can join with your browser, or a smartphone. The modalities are described in your invitation link.

As presenter (Panelists)

You, as part of the panelists, will be able to share your screen, video and audio and are able to answer asked questions. Please do use a headset to prevent us from audio feedback during your talk. We will provide the opportunity to do a dry-run beforehand to test the software and your hardware. The dry-run is scheduled for friday, 2020.12.04. We will discuss timeslots with you in private.

We have a schedule

The summit schedule is public!

The virtual GeoNode Summit 2020 will be held from December 07 to 09 as web conference. With over 110 attendees from all over the world finding a schedule which enabled our 16 speakers to present was not easy but we have done it!

Presentations

We decided to give us as community as much time as possible to present the ways GeoNode is currently used ‘in the wild’ and/or shall be developed further. This lead to nine presentations covering the broad use-cases you can cover by using GeoNode in your GIS stack.

But this years summit is not only a place to get inspired and to spark discussions, but also to learn!

Workshops

Therefore we asked our community what topics they are interested in. Based on our survey we asked experienced community members if they could lead workshops. We ended up with 6 hours of workshop materials split into two separate tracks.

Call for virtual presentations and workshops

The call for presentations and workshop ideas is open again!

The virtual GeoNode Summit 2020 will be held from December 07 to 09 as web conference. If you want to be part of this great event as a speaker or want to lead a workshop you can find all the information below:

Presenters – who should speak at the GeoNode Summit?

developers
companies developing software (apps, tools, frameworks etc.)
research institutions with GeoNode relevant activities
companies, organisations and individuals using GeoNode technologies (Django, GeoServer, PostGIS, AngularJS, React, etc.)

If you belong to one of those groups you are cordially invited to submit a talk proposal (or a number of proposals). To do so please provide the following information inside a pdf file:

presentation title,
a short abstract,
estimated presentation time (5 - 30 minutes),
your name,
the organization you work for,
your short bio
and an email for contacting you.

Please note: There is no guarantee that a submission will be put onto the conference agenda.

You should upload the pdf file here. You must authenticate with the following password: Summit-2020

The call for presentations will be open until 29-11-2020. The program committee picks the most interesting talk proposals and informs the selected submitters until December 1, 2020. After we see the topics and abstracts for the presentations we will get in contact with you to answer any open questions.

Workshop Leaders – who should lead a workshop at the GeoNode Summit?

If you belong to one of those groups you are cordially invited to submit a workshop proposal. The workshop shall provide a hands on experience in your domain of experience. If you would like to host a workshop please provide a short description as pdf file:

presentation title,
a short abstract,
estimated workshop time (30 - 90 minutes),
your name,
the organization you work for,
your short bio
and an email for contacting you.

Please note: We will not cover expenses or provide money for workshop leaders. There is no guarantee that a submission will be put onto the conference agenda.

Due to the ongoing pandemic this years GeoNode Summit will be held virtual. The summit will cover codesprints, talks and small workshops as usually but will be hosted as web conference by the Thünen Institute. The summit will be held on the following dates:

2020.12.09: Codesprints for documentation and GeoNode core

Free webinar about GeoNode version 3

State of GeoNode 3.0 Free Webinar

GeoNode 3.0 was released about a month ago. See GeoNode blog for complete details. There is usually a presentation GeoSolutions does at the GeoNode summit, but as you know, the summit was postponed. Therfore they are doing a free webinar on July 7th at 11:00 Eastern Time. You can find more informations at GeoSolutions blogpost.

Some highlights of what’s new:

– GeoNode components have been updated to new versions: Python upgrade 3.7, Django upgrade 2.2.12, GeoServer upgrade 2.16.2.

– MapStore is now the default client greatly enriching the experience for viewing the data.

– Greatly improved analytics and getting information about who is visiting the website and their actions. For example, you can see unique visitors who trigger a specific type of event.

– Improved full GeoNode backup & restore.

– Extended GeoNode shared permission via GeoLimits to restrict users or groups to a specific geographical area (see below).

GeoNode Summit 2020 will virtual

Due to this years COVID-19 crisis we decided to switch the on-premise summit to a virtual one for 2020. The summit will cover codesprints, talks and workshops as usually but will be hosted as web conference by the original host the Thünen Institute.

We will inform you about new dates as soon as possible.

Summit will be postponed due to COVID-19

GeoNode Summit 2020 will be postponed

We are sorry to inform you that the GeoNode Summit 2020 will be postponed due to current COVID-19 developments. Parts of the community where unable to attend the summit in germany resulting in very little registration numbers and missing important speakers for the talks. The already registered persons are informed and the organizers of the event are looking for an alternative date to meet in brunswick later this year. If you want to discuss with us join the conversation on one of the available channels.

We will inform you about new dates as soon as possible.

GeoNode online Meetup and Code-Sprint

We will organize an alternative online event like a meetup and code-sprint at the original Summits date. The details are yet to be discussed.
